No Kimchi For Me by Aram Kim

Often we think things are just us, our community but there is a notion: Politically black. But I will blog about that another time. Today I would like to share  from another perspective about food, and politics. Today my sister met Aram Kim, author and illustrator of No Kimchi For MeI decided to blog about Ms. Kim because of her story.

I was immediately drawn to the book because it about FOOD!

"Yoomi loves Grandma's dried seaweed, tiny anchovies, soft egg omelets... even her seasoned bean spouts!"

That is one of the first sentences. On inside cover has various Korean veggies!I loved this story because it's about (small spoiler) )Sibling Dynamics, I was hoping from the beginning she would share a kimchi recipe (she does) but lastly, here is her story, what I really wanted to share.

At the conference she mention that when illustrating the book, she battled whether or not to portray the main character as a human or an animal.  She felt that if she drew an Asian child she would loose some audiences immediately.  The cover does tell you if the book will be about self-identity or acceptance of traditions. Seven and eight year olds intrigued why doesn't the main character want to eat Kimchi, what is Kimchi? Is it a family drama or perhaps its just taste buds. No Kimchi for me is great read; excellent way to introduce other cultures to your child and to discuss self identity.
