Where o where does plastic endup?
I recently came across Empower: Global Plastic Clean-up. Empower is a Norwegian conservation company working in over 30 countries to close the plastic production chain.Empower partners with local community organizations to engage citizens in recycling plastic. Any type of plastic can be redeem and in the process they beautify a local park, estuary, river... their community.
Empower uses blockchain technology to register and certify the plastic they collected and processed.
Recyclers earn digital tokens which they can trade in for legal tender.
At the same time, Empowers contacts with international buyers and manufactures to buy the recently collected plastic.
According to empower, buyers are willing to pay a higher price per ton for certified recycle plastic. It enables businesses to comply with EU regulations in order to meet sustainable goals.
How can you get involved?
You could use reduce and recycle the plastic you use. You can also donate to help fund clean-ups or when given the opportunity purchase sustainable produce items. With a "plastic journey pass" consumers, can track which clean-up produce the product they are buying.
I think we should also push Congress to enact similar requirements for American business. It would help curb excess plastic use more effectively than only "banning the bag. Also this would be incredible paid opportunity for people to clean up estuaries across the USA.
Furthermore, how impact would it be to fund systems like this in place of charitable aid? How would this look like if instead or in conjunction with free medicine, clothes or food, we created job opportunities in high-poverty areas of the Bronx, in Haiti, in London? Would this help residents remain self- sufficient?
I would love to see empower att work on The Bronx River or at Orchard Beach. Empower could be used as a ladder for social mobility. It gives people the opportunity to earn extra income, use it as their source of income, and build spin-off companies from their recycling with Empower.
