Tomatoes and I
The most politically captivating vegetable in my life is a fruit. It's tomatoes... Eating food became political because of my family. Through out my childhood my Uncle Billups brought my family fresh calms he caught himself. Someone was always bring back bass and trout sharing fishy tales. :) My cousin na brought bushels of peaches and Bishop Green welcomed the summer by slicing cold watermelon after church. These moments of good eating shone bright, but they weren't a beacon to change.Until, one day I talked, while I ate with my taste buds.
That day, I was cooking for the church with my aunt Mary from Virginia. She had prep and started cooking somethings. I bustled in the kitchen, pulling out my all my groceries, looking over she asked me they were fresh. If I shopped at a Farmer's Market. "Nah, not today" I replied. I offered my aunt some of my tomatoes from Pathmark. She smiled "these tomatoes don't have any flavor. I brought up my tomatoes from my garden." She said. Now this was a couple of years back... I thought bringing tomatoes from Virginia was a bit much. Then, she cut me a slice 3 inches wide. "They are better because they are "organic?" No honey, taste it...
That's when I knew it matter... Eating vegetables was not enough, I wanted access to fresh, delicious and nutritious food.
