Serving Sugar: Orange Juice
Recently my friend, who is an elementary health teacher and I got into a discussion around nutrition as I was making him a cup of tea... Me discussing nutrition is not really surprising, but its interesting what tidbits one could gather, that we don't usually connect like where is salt in our diet or natural sugar vs. artificial sugar? This time orange juice became the culprit. It all started when I asked him:
What did you have for lunch?
A grill chicken salad, he replied. He proceed to describe what was in - after looking at my face.
Surprised I replied, I am not sure that would have filled me.
Well, I am going to go home and have a heavy dinner.
My friend is about 6 feet. OK, so then we began to discuss calories, servings and somehow orange juice.
He stated that orange juice was pure sugar, especially "The good stuff..." Sunny Delight.
Even Tropicana with the pulp? (Now I wasn't really surprise as I heard this during a diabetes self management. class. if your blood goes low, drink some oj. But I still don't think OJ is pure sugar.)
Yes, he replied that's why you are only suppose to drink 8 oz.
Then I asked: "well if one cup of juice counts as one serving and can I drink my servings of fruits and vegetables straight."
No, it would be better to drink orange juice and a glass of water if you were still thirsty. That's why schools serve orange juice in that small container.
The conversation shift as he tea became ready and we got to prepping our Community Health Workshop. Needless to say I wrote this blog because today as I was drinking orange juice in a small mason glass, I remember our conversation. I wonder if I had gone over the serving amount. Apparently, 300 ml = 1 1'4 cup = 10 oz (A serving is 8 oz.). However, that container we got in school .. it's only 4 oz! So if you get thirsty... kids go for another one.
However, I am still thinking: Does serving amounts differ on body height, gender, or weight?
Until next time.
