Institutional Racism : What happened at Harvard and at CUNY, Pratt...

In the aftermath of the recent outrest due to the consecutive killings of Black folks in early June several organizations feel compelled to make public statements. As a black person I was confused....

Racist institutions felt compelled to show concern, why? Did they think that their words would pacific folks? comfort folks? Create some idea as if there institutions were not apart of the problem? They do not act on classist and racist theorist. I mean... from Chase bank, NYC Department of City Planning, to and various departments at Pratt Institution. Some statements where better than others... but that's another blog.

Overall, to me it look like a publicity stunt for money. Well now their constitutions have been pushing back and asking: What does standing in solidarity look like? What will be the lasting effects of the Black Lives Matter movement or will the powers that be get away with another example of performative progressiveness? What will push leaders to stop the fakery?

At Harvard students published an open letter:  Teaching Harvard How to Be Anti-Racist. It was presented jointly by the  African American Student Union (AASU) and AfricaGSD  a It was directed at the Graduate School of Design’s administration for how the school must institutionalize anti-racism in the Urban Studies and Planning program. It lays out the 13 demands titled “Notes on Credibility,” that students have asked of the University as well as the respond from the Dean Sarah Whiting.

It is powerful, that it was direct as the school of Urban Studies and Planning, after all urbanists have used their skills to uphold oppressive subverise social norms. Other planning programs include Pratt also faced similar criticisms from their student body. Irregradless of the institution response, as community it's important for us to revist W.E.B.Dubois and George Washington Carver timeless debate.   It's critical that we reevaluate the pathways for upward social mobility we recommend to Black youth. Should they go to trade schools or get academic credentials. Is it necessary to go on to graduate school, Law school and phd programs etc.?
