Why start a food buying club / Community-supported agriculture (CSA)?

Here are 12 reasons why we need a Community supported agriculture (CSA) in the Bronx run by local residents

  1. We eat year around, don't you want good food year around?
  2. There is a supply of locally grown produce, less than 200 miles away from me.
  3. Farmers deserve to be PAID a living wage
  4. By removing the middle man, we can shorten the time between harvest and consumption which equals FRESHER PRODUCE
  5. To increase access to locally grown organic produce
  6. Eating fruits and vegetables will improve our physical and mental health
  7.  Ordering from a farmer we can have a greater choice in produce
  8. It is cheaper to buy in bulk
  9. Become introduce to a greater variety of vegetables and fruits beyond what local supermarkets offer
  10. Eating produce in sync with the seasons, lessens harmful impacts on environment
  11. Build a regional economy between upstate farmers and downstate residents
  12. Reconnect to the process and responsibility of eating
The industrialization of the food chain hides many necessary steps to consumption. Some steps we don't often consider include the paying migrant farmers who pick the produce or the   shelf life impact on nutritional value. When we eat with out considering the effort it took to grow food, it has negative impacts on our health, social circles and the wealth of our neighborhoods. Community supported agriculture (CSA) links farmers with inner city residents. By working together to run a CSA residents can build a stronger sense of community. Managing a small-scale food system like a CSA would help address the aforementioned social determinants of health. Seasonal farmer markets and food boxes from Project Eats are great but I need vegetables in the winter as well.
