bugs are not nice #2 (HORMIGAS!!)

So, as you might have read... I am not really a bug killer. While... after the scorpion incident I realized all pests are not welcome. I still wasn´t convinced however, that I should just go and kill them. When I told my fellow classmates they laughed and replied that they had also seen some other interesting creatures, such as the gecko, as in the small lizard in the car insurance commercials. Yes I have them too... in white and They are also called... perros sompopos in Costa Rica. They are harmless.

Back to insects: two other events made me become less friendly to the little insects. Firstly, mosquito bites, boy are those things annoying. My first week in Costa Rica I got 21 bites. After that I started applying insect repellent more religiously and also swapping at whatever flew too close to me. Secondly, ants: ´Hormigas.... muchas hormigas... hay muchas hormigas en mi escritorio.´ Translation: There are a lot of little ants on my desk. when I first saw them, I must admit, I didn´t kill them. Here is the story of how they came to reside on my desk! I had a little cube(from Adelphi) in which I kept my beloved candy. I had some candy from home, along with some candy that I bought in punteranas.

Guess what - they have strawberries in Costa Rica! The candy.... you know the one that is wrapped to look like a strawberry. It´s in the upper righthand corner of the above picture. Also, when I was on the ferry they had chocolate as in Hershey´s m&m´s. My friends got excited. They said: "they have real chocolate here!!" but american products... that´s another blog.
Back to my candy and the little tiny ants... One day I was at my desk reading when I saw an ant walking in circles. I blew it to the floor, soon after, I saw another. Then looking up, I noticed an army of ants marching to and fro on my desk. I followed them to their destination and bang. Colony of ants had assembled in my little candy box. :( Enraged, I quickly took my candy box to the garbage and dumped the contents. I proceeded to smash the invaders. However, they refused to leave. Yes... about 4 days after I threw away my candy, there is still a bunch of little ants crawling around. So now I am being the great big, mean, giant sent forth from the concrete jungle planet to kill them.

  1. April, you know I would do the same thing! Yes, Ants are God's creatures but they don't belong inside!
I am sorry you had to throw all that candy out but now you know that you can't stock up on sweets and hide them in your room.
    Please post more pictures!!
