Tina Fey blog, yea!
I hope you're wondering: how does Tina Fey connect with social justice? Well this is just the thing, this post is about recycling! As, I was catching the D train, I saw this poster and I was immediately reminded that I wanted to write a piece about PLASTIC BAGS.
In 2014, I was listen to WNYC broadcast about some students who were rallying in Brooklyn in support with councilmember Brad Lander to promote reusable bags. Councilmember Brad Lander even proposed bringing the "10 cent - plastic bag tax" to NY. This caught my attention for two reasons: It was both refreshing and irksome.
It's exciting to hear youth and especially working adults taking action around an issue. Often Americans feel disenfranchised, so its very refreshing to see folks active around positive change. It's empowering to see the public's "belief in humanity" increased. However, I was irked about this petition for two reasons. Firstly, I find plastic bags to be very helpful. Secondly, I found that tax to be regressive. Lastly, I feel that if one wants to build an environmentally and socially conscious public... is implementing a plastic ban an effective way?... hmm I will leave that for another blog.
In closing here are 5 ways to reuse plastic bags.
... now imagine it cost 10cents for a plastic bag if you didn't have a reusable one? Granted, I must go to California and see how this plastic bag ban works over there

- Shower Cap- As shown above... do you really want to pay 3.29 for 5 bags with elastic?
- Small garbage bags- that tiny garbage can... do you really want to pay upwards of $15?
- Use it to pick up dog poop
- Cover your hair or suede shoes in the rain.
- Storage bags - need a bag to compartmentalize when travelling to store food, cosmetics, etc.
