Snails in the garden

Working in the garden this summer has been an adventure. Almost every day the kids teach me something new. One thing I am really grateful to God is that the kids aren't truely squeamish around the ants, snails and bees. Usually its the teens that are jumping and hollering. At the beginning I had a little talk with them about the power of the smell. Imagine waking up from our sleep by the smell of bacon. Is coming from the kitchen or did your older brother finish cooking and is greedily eating alone in his room? As I compared us smelling bacon to bee's smelling Flowers in the air. I believed it worked, now they practice sitting still when bees fly ahead and unfortunately choosing to take snails home.
Although Snails are probably not the best first pet, it has it pros. One, I think it builds character trying to keep one alive. Secondly, the snails are destructive in their own right. I enjoyed watching them become friends. Teaching them about snails and watching as they became fascinated with the snail abilities. I hope after this summer the kids will continue to be stewards of the environment.
