Staking tomatoes
"The tomatoes are coming in and I have not staked them at all".
That thought comes from our elders. My maternal grandparents came up as sharecroppers or my dad helped his family cultivate a ranch in the Caribbean, this was their principal way to sustain themselves. However, gardening in NYC, is not tedious labor. You just have to put in some good Saturdays in the spring.
Before I went to California to attend the APA conference, we planted all of our crops. Everyday for a week I came back, I was thinking of when I would have time to check on my garden. We planted several types of tomatoes. Tomatoes will root the stalk to the ground if you do not stake them upwards.
That was my worry asI passed another community garden on my way to church. When I passed, I would slow down peek in and say to myself ok no tomatoes yet. However, when I finally made time to go to my garden a week later, my tomatoes had not only grew pass my knee but they were bearing fruit. Thank God, the day I finally made it to stake tomatoes some of my fellow gardeners were available to teach me how to stake and help me stake up the 15 tomatoes plants.
