Tomatoe Crush
Since, I have started working around food justice, I hear many different comments about supermarets in the South Bronx. Now, I don't take the touble to go to Whole Foods or Trader Joes, yet according to folks my family and I eat pretty healthy. I also think my local supermakert is pretty awesome.
However, in making connections; this comment is always consistent: "Supermaerkts in the south Bronx offer poor produce. Residents often have a small selection to choose from either bruised or overpriced-organic produce."
Well, I don't know about small selection but I must say, I was crushed with a tomato deliema: They are price and GMO tomatoes compared with offers in other boroughs.
The cherry tomatoes were 2.49 a packet, the campari tomatoes were 3.29 and cheapest were the roma tomatoes were 1.29/lb.
After much deliberation, I deciede to buy the overprices tomatoes... they were a darker red and firm. The roma tomatoes below were super pale, not ready for a salad or cooking.
