The Steve Harvey Show: Corporal Punishment

As I thinking about empowering and engaging my community, the various methods of communication and their effectiveness... with my time in cabs I am listening to the radio more. Earlier this week, my cab driver was listening to the Steve Harvey show.

This particular segment was a prank on a father of a struggling ELA student. Steve Harvey called the father, pretending to be a new principal of the school - who was reinstating Corporal Punishment.

The father vehemently refuse to approve "if necessary Corporal Punishment: paddling measure". Harvey "the Principal" even mention that if his son got into trouble the police have the authority to beat people into submission. Yet, the father refused, he even went as far as to threaten the principal with corporal punishment. It was a very enterntaining discussion. At the end when Steve Harvey introduced himself, he also agree that he would not let any teacher put their hands on his child.
However, reflecting on the state of our schools, the struggle of the teachers in my life around educating problematic students, the influence of Steve Harvey in the community, the economy and social environment... I think something should have been said on the effectiveness of correctly punishing your child.
