Only 15 people
After two years on the community board, I am trying to figure out if
its really worth it. Do we really have the ability to create change and
impact policies?
Since, I've joined the community board, I've learned many things, experience many conflicting feelings. At times I became excited about a new resource coming to my community, was timid to speak up, confused about what was going on, discouraged by the votes that were cast, in awe of community residents who spoke up.
Last year, I accept a position as a community organizer with the Mary Mitchell Center. It's been challenging at times to guage the interest and power of my community. Recently when speaking to Mr. Parker, who is a retired vet and also a community garden manager about community organizing. "If you want to change anything all you need is 15 people."
What only 15 people?
15 people to show up at rallies, 15 people to break into grous and attend meetings, 15 people to address thier elected officals. 15 people who will bring 2 people each when the time is right.
This is what I've learn to be true, this has inspired me to action. The squeaky wheel gets the most oil...
